The famous words of Nike – Just Do It!!
Can you imagine if we all applied that phrase to every aspect of our lives.
Just get on with doing whatever it is that we want to do. Imagine what our lives would look like!
Procrastination is one of the biggest reasons that people don’t get started in property investing. Actually, it’s one of the biggest reasons people don’t do a lot of things. We often choose to do the easy tasks first because the really important tasks are hard and sometimes uncomfortable. Or for a lot of us, we delay doing something because we’re waiting for the right time to do it.
I’m here to tell you that the right time is NOW. Don’t wait for the perfect conditions, or until you’re sure it feels right. Just do it NOW. Make the time to read something about investing. Make the time to look at properties online. Make the time to speak with people who can help you get started. The ‘busyness’ of your life is always going to be there, so don’t let the chaos of today prevent you from creating your life for tomorrow.
Did you know that continually procrastinating can set you back months, years or even decades from doing things that you really want to do? Procrastination will steal your time and time is something that you can never get back.
I remember in my early days of investing my husband and I would procrastinate a lot because the task that needed to be done (to educate ourselves) was just too hard and we had no idea what we were doing. It was easier to do the housework (!) because that didn’t involve anything that made us feel uncomfortable. We were so caught up in making sure that we knew everything and that the property had to be perfect, that we wasted months and months essentially doing nothing. We would be looking online at the same properties every week and not making any decisions to actually buy one of them. In the end I was fed up! I was so tired of looking and telling myself why it wasn’t the right one to buy … so I ‘just did it’! I made an offer on one of the properties. It was this action that kick-started us into a little momentum and started the ball rolling. Many more offers followed this and we were on our way!
The one thing I realised was that there was never going to be the ‘perfect’ property. There was always going to be something that we were unsure about. But I couldn’t let that stop us. Building a property portfolio for my family’s future was far too important to keep putting off until it felt completely right.
The best book I have ever read about procrastination is ‘Eat That Frog’ by Brian Tracy. An unusual title but one that makes complete sense as you make your way through this amazing book. If you know that you tend to procrastinate about nearly everything … read this book!
My quick tips on how to beat procrastination and start moving forward:
1. Break down a task into smaller tasks
2. Make time in your day to actually do it
3. Give yourself a deadline in which to complete it
4. Do the hardest and most uncomfortable task first
5. Don’t think about it too much
6. Reward your progress no matter how small it is
Never allow waiting to become a habit for you.
Start something new by taking one small step in the direction that you want to go, and then take the next step, and then the next one. You WILL get there.
